The Owner of My Soul Vol 1: Chapter 10 and Chapter 11

CHAPTER 10

Wednesday finally rolled around. I was lying in my bed that morning. I didn’t really feel like goin to school, so I didn’t plan on it. I put on some workout clothes and decided to work myself to death. I had no idea where Monique was, but she said she was comin straight here when she got back into town. I started lifting weights to pass by time. It’s been two days since the club incident, yet I still have a bad feeling in my gut. Like there’s more to it. All I know is, if I find the snitch, he or she will know the true meaning of pain.
After lifting weights for 2 hours, I decided to wail on the punching bag for a lil bit. I didn’t really put any power to my swings, but each hit was causing a lot of ruckus on the bag. I was so into hitting the bag, I didn’t realize Monique was watching the whole time. In fact, I was so into it, I was having a conversation with her and didn’t realize it.
“Are you always this focused?” She asked me.
“You have to be. If you’re not, you’re less effective.” I replied.
“If you hit it any harder you’ll bust it.”
“I’m tryin to avoid that to the best of my ability.”
“You decided to skip school so you can work out?”
“Waiting on Monique. I figured I can ditch school and wait for her. This is just to pass by time.”
“What you goin to do wit her when she comes back to you?”
“Hold her, kiss her, caress her…just love her, ya dig?”
“Definitely.”
“Good.”
“So how bout you stop focusing so hard on that bag and pay attention to her.” I stopped swinging and looked up.
“Holy crap. You were talking to me the whole time weren’t you?”
She started smiling, “yep, and I was wondering how long it would take before you noticed.” I walked up to her and hugged her. “I missed you so much, Kenny.”
“I missed you too.” I kissed her and didn’t want to stop. When I did, I just held her.
“I’m tired, let’s go downstairs.” She requested. I nodded and took her hand. We walked downstairs and cuddled in the bed. “Baby, I have something important to tell you.”
“Shhhh, no important talk. I don’t want to discuss anything important. I just wanna hold you and pretend my life is safe.” I could tell she was a lil confused by that statement. “Whateva it is baby girl, tell me later.” She rested her head on my chest. I kissed her forehead and played with her hair. “When I’m with you, it feels like I have no problems. It’s like everything is ok and there’s nothing to worry about.”
“What are you sayin, Kenny?”
“The happiness you bring to me has no comparison. If I didn’t know better, I’d say I was living a carefree life. I’d be a fool to think that.”
“Baby, you’re scaring me.”
“Look, things are becoming unsafe.”
“Don’t even think about it, Mr. Johnson. If you think I’m goin to let you break up wit me because things are getting too dangerous then you’re sadly mistaken. I would rather die with you than let you walk out my life.”
“That’s coo and er’thang baby girl, but I wasn’t bout to say that.”
“Oh. What were you bout to say then?”
“I’m sayin, things are becoming unsafe so I may seem a lil more paranoid than before; to a point where I’m constantly looking around and carrying a heat.”
“I understand, Kenny. You gotta do what you gotta do to stay alive.”
“I’m not worried bout myself, sweetie. I’m worried about you.”
“Me? Why me?”
“Gunn Down was bold enough to use my sista as a bargaining chip to kill me. It got close to working, but luckily it didn’t.”
“I see.”
“Someone out there is feeding information to Gunn Down and I wanna know who it is.” I looked up at the ceiling. Monique had a puzzled look on her face. Like she had somethin to say but didn’t know how to say it.
“When will the boys get out the hospital?” She asked.
“Friday….possibly tomorrow night.”
“They won’t have any permanent injuries, will they?”
“Just mentally. Someone set them up and I’m sure it’s burning up inside having to deal with it without a clue on whom it could be, ya dig?” She nodded.
“I can tell you’ve been losing sleep over this.”
“Haven’t had a blink.”
“I’m here, now.”
She looked up at me and kissed me. That definitely got my mind off things for a while. When she stopped, seconds later, I was knocked out. She lied there wit me and soon fell asleep herself.
I ended up waking up two hours later. Monique was gone and left a note:

Baby,
I went home for a while. I’ll be back later on tonight. Sleep well and I’ll talk to you later. Love you.

Monique

I smiled and put the note back on the nightstand. I wanted to go back to sleep so bad, but somethin was telling me I needed to get up. My guess was right as Will knocked on my door. I opened it for him.
“Aye, get dressed. We gotta make a run.” He said.
“Where to?”
“School. If we go now, we’ll be able to play tonight.”
“Dammit, we do have a game tonight.”
I hurried up and took a shower. I was dressed in 10 minutes. We rushed to school and got there during 2nd period. We looked at each other.
“So when did this occur to you that we had a game tonight?”
“5 minutes before I got you.” He replied. “Of course, you do realize we’re the only ones here?”
“Yea, and I’m willing to deal with that.” I said.

When school let out, Will and I went to the gym for our team meeting. Coach approached us.
“I can understand if y’all don’t feel up to par with all the distractions.”
“Come on now, Coach. You know we don’t get distracted.” I told him.
“Well, tonight we face off against Grady High School. You can bring your “A” game if you want to, but you’ll prolly only need your “D” game.” He proclaimed.
“I see.” I looked at Will. “Looks like we’re comin out in the second half.”
“More like 2nd quarter.” He stated.
The game was to be played here in a couple of hours, and of course, they were the underdogs. Game time quickly approached, meaning it was time to do some niggas wrong.

“This was by far the most one-sided game I’ve ever witnessed. KT High School pounded and embarrassed Grady High, 135-60. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard me correctly. Will Smith and Kenny Johnson of KT High were pulled out at the end of the first quarter. At the end of the 1st, KT High had a commanding lead of 75-2, as the only two points for Grady was on the free throw line. Kenny’s night ended with 35 points, 27 steals, 10 boards, 17 assists, 4 blocks, and 0 turnovers. He was a perfect 6-6 behind the arch. As for Will, his night ended with 32 points, 20 steals, 15 boards, 10 assists and 6 blocks. Will was a perfect 8-8 behind the arch. Now as I tell these stats, keep in mind that Will and Kenny only played 10 minutes of basketball, all in the first quarter.”
“That is amazing. Grady is not a bad basketball team. They did make it to the elite 8 in the High School Basketball Tournament. I have no idea what ignited Will and Kenny, but they came out here focused and on fire. Combined, Will and Kenny had 67 of the team’s 135 points. Like you said, they were all in the first quarter. They were well on their way to make over 100 points a piece.”
“And if they keep playing like tonight, the league mine as well hand them the championship. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, as this is only game four of the season. The KT Cyborgs improve to 4-0 as Grady receives their first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1.”

Will and I walked out to the car and couldn’t help but smile.
“What a game we coulda had.” He said.
“Ya know.” I agreed. “Couple more like that and we’ll be making history stats.” I got into my car and started it. “I’ll holla at ya tomorrow.”
“Fa sho.” He started his car and led the way home.
I got home and immediately made preparations for Monique. I had rose pedals lead from the door to the kitchen, where I had her favorite prepared. Then some more pedals leading from the kitchen to the bed. The table was set with candles and my most expensive dishes. I also had my platinum fork set on the table. I made a CD with her favorite love songs and had it playing. It was about 8:15. Monique was scheduled to be here in a minute or so. This is one girl that’s neva late. She proved that when she knocked on my door. I dimmed the lights and walked to the door. I opened it for her and smiled.
“Right on time like always.” I said.
“I don’t like to make you wait.” She said, smiling.
“Please, come in.” I took her hand and slightly pulled her to me. I gave her a hug and sensual kiss.
“Heard about your game. Why didn’t you call me and tell me to come?”
“I figured you wanted to have some home time.” She looked around and noticed everything.
“You have quite a night planned.”
“Well, just a lil somethin-somethin.” I led her to the table, pulled her chair out, and pushed it in when she sat down. “Chicken Alfredo.” I said, revealing her plate.
“That looks too good.” She said. I poured her some wine. “Isn’t this the most expensive wine on the shelf?”
“That it is. They say it’s the best tasting wine ever made.”
“So what’s the occasion?”
“We’re together, I love you, you love me, and that’s the only occasion we need.” I smiled and took her hand. “I’ve neva felt the way that I do now.”
“Me neither.” She said, smiling.
“Now, I prepared this meal by myself. I also made the sauce.” I watched her taste it. Right off the back, I knew she loved it.
“Damn, baby, this is orgasmic.” She took another forkful. “Definitely the best I’ve tasted. I didn’t know you cook like this.”
“Well, when you have a sister that owns her own restaurant, you kinda take in some skills.”
“Which sister is that?”
“Dionna. She’s my older sista that stay on the West side. I don’t see her that often cuz she’s busy mastering things or perfecting recipes.”
“And she taught you this?”
“Not necessarily. Everything I learned from her I tweaked to my style.” I tasted it myself. “Damn, I hooked dis shit up. I did better than I thought.”
“You should open a restaurant business.” She proclaimed.
“I thought about it, but when I take charge of SJ Enterprise with Will, whose gon take control of my restaurant and keep da food tight.”
“So what are you gon take charge of?”
“Well, in the making is SJ Enterprises next video game console. As you know, Nintendo has dominated for the past 30 years with minimum competition from Microsoft and Sony. Dad loves competition, so he wants to take on Nintendo. Since Will and I are the biggest video game players he know, he wants us to run the company.”
“Wow. When does it start?”
“He’s aiming for next year. That gives us some time on learning the shit.” She giggled.
“What about the NBA?”
“We’ll do both.” I started thinking about this. “Question.”
“Yes.”
“Do you intend on doing anything with your life?”
“Of course. I’m looking into business management, fashion, and marketing. Remember, my dad owns a clothing line. I do intend on inheriting that.”
“No doubt.”
“Let me ask you somethin.”
“Shoot.”
“Do you ever plan on movin out of your parents’ house, or are you stayin like David?”
“I intend on movin out.”
“When you graduate?”
“Possibly sooner.”
“Where?”
“I’ll have somethin built on the outside of town.”
“I see.” She stopped eating for a moment. “I would like to make a toast.” I finished chewing and lifted my glass.
“To what, my dear?” I asked her.
“To us. May we be together forever.”
“I second that emotion.” We tapped glasses and sipped the wine. “I definitely agree. This is the best wine I’ve ever tasted.”
“Without a doubt.” She agreed. We continued eating.
“Speaking of your father, does he ever tell you anything when you come home from here?”
“No. I rarely see him, for one, and he’s usually not home when I’m here, so he doesn’t know.”
“What about your mom?”
“Same thing.”
“I see.”
“I’m not as close to my parents as you are.”
“Baby girl, I don’t know if you noticed, but my parents are gone 85% of the time.”
“Yea, but they’re so intuned with your life.”
“You have a point.” We finished eating when I noticed her absolute favorite song was on. “May I have this dance?” I asked.
“Yes you may.” I took her hand and we danced. Midway through the song, she starting whispering in my ear, “this is by far the most magical evening I’ve ever had.”
“Well, I try my best.”
I kissed her. She led me to the bed and had me get on top of her. I pulled down the straps of her dress and kissed her shoulders and made my way down. We did a lot of foreplay and made love for hours.

12:30 AM hit when we finished. I was tired as shit. She lied on my chest and was lightly rubbing my chest and stomach.
“Baby, I think I should tell you now.” She said, looking up at me.
“Tell me what?”
“I don’t know how much this will affect us, but I’m….” She stopped as my phone rang. “Don’t answer it.” I looked to see who it was.
“Damn, sorry, but I have to answer it.” I answered it, “wassup Dad?”
“Come downstairs immediately. We have somethin for you.”
“I’m on my way.” I stood up and threw somethin on. I put on boxers, shorts, a wife beater, and my house shoes. “I’m sorry, baby. Don’t forget what you’re goin to say. I’ll be back in a minute.” She nodded and looked very upset. “Please, forgive me.” I kissed her and left. I got downstairs and saw Will come through the front door.
“Must be big if they called me ova.” He said as he saw me.
“Fa sho.” We walked to the Conference Room. Dad, Uncle T, Aunt Keasha, and 4 other people we didn’t recognize were in the room.
“What’s goin on?” I asked.
“I mean if we’re interrupting something, we can come back later.”
“Gentlemen, you’re right on time.” Uncle Tevin said.
“Please, have a seat.” Dad said. “Let’s start off with introductions.” Will and I sat down and looked at each of the four men.
“Kenny, Will, meet Frank Fisher, Thomas Jones, Robert Jones, and Earl Martin. These four men are the USA High School Basketball Recruiters.” Uncle Tevin informed us.
“The what?” We said at the same time.
“You heard him.” Dad said. “This year, the United States will be entering in a world-wide tournament consisting of 16,384 teams.” Our eyes lit up.
“Most games will be played in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, the Caribbean, and the National Championship will be….here.” Uncle Tevin added. Our eyes lit up even more. Earl Martin began to speak.
“Our task is to find the 16 best players in the nation. At least, that’s the job of our organization. We four are designated to just the state of Ohio.”
Then Frank Fisher spoke, “when we received word that we were assigned to Ohio, we immediately thought of the best players in the world today.” We smiled.
Thomas Jones added, “It’s obvious the world knew you were goin to be our first draft picks. Unfortunately, our picks have to be high school seniors or college freshmen.”
Robert Jones also spoke, “what my brother means is if we weren’t limited like that, the two that follows your footsteps so well would be next on our list.”
“You mean KJ and Terrell.” I confirmed.
“Precisely.” Earl answered. “Now, before you make a decision, let us fill you in on all of the conditions, terms, and duration. Robert, if you please?”
“The tournament begins November 30th. The championship will be played on April 10th of next year. It is a double elimination tournament, so brackets will be kinda difficult to determine. Your first destination will be Paris, France. If you decide to come, we would leave November 27th, which is the Friday after Thanksgiving. Being sponsored by SJ Enterprise, players will be staying in the finest hotels, each well furnished, the size of apartments. International long distance will be included so each player will be able to contact family and friends at home. It goes without saying that no one is allowed to come with you. You will have a roommate; of course, it’ll be you two in a room no matter what. The only money you need to bring is for souvenirs, merchandise, and snacks. All meals will be paid for. All games will be on national television. Some will be worldwide. If you weren’t already the top two picks, this will add more fire to the fuel. You definitely will get recognition.” I began thinking to myself.
“What about school?” Aunt Keasha asked.
“As long as you are passing all classes, you will graduate on time.” Thomas Jones replied.
“So we’re goin to be gone for 5 months?” Will asked.
“Well, let me make sure that’s right.” Robert started goin through his papers. “I take that back. You would leave November 1st til March 3rd.”
“At least I’d be back in time for my birthday.” I said. “Do we have to make a decision right away?”
“Of course not.” Uncle Tevin replied. “Think about it. We’ll need an answer by tomorrow night though.”
“Look, as your agents and as your fathers, this is a perfect opportunity.” Dad said. “Of course, the trip has to be approved by your mothers.” Dad and Uncle T looked at Aunt Keasha.
“We both approve and would like you to take this opportunity to travel the world.” Aunt Keasha replied.
“We just need some time. It’s a lot to take in at one time.” Will replied.
“Where is Mom by the way?” I asked.
“At the hospital. She had an emergency to take care. She already knows everything that’s goin on.” Dad replied.
I kinda had a feeling that she was up there. Will looked at me and nodded. We stood up at the same time.
“It’s all good and very interesting, but we really have to think about this. It was nice meeting you gentlemen.” Will said. We shook the hands of the four recruiters.
“We’ll have Dad inform you when we make our decision.” I said. We walked out the room, only to be followed by Dad and Uncle T.
“What is there to think about?” Uncle Tevin asked.
“Dad, you’re talking bout leavin in November. Basketball season here is not over then.” Will replied.
“We now have to choose between turning our backs on our school, or staying and winning another national championship.” I added.
“I see.” Uncle T said. “Very well, do what you have to do. We need to know by next Friday.” We nodded and headed to the elevator.
“That’s not the real reason we’re thinking bout this offer, is it?” Will asked.
“Of course not. You know damn well we prefer a world title over a national. Beyonce and Monique is who I’m thinking bout.” I replied.
“Me too. How do you think they gon take it?”
“I have no idea. Most likely support us but at the same time, don’t want us to go.”
“Fa sho.” I walked Will to the door. “We’ll talk about it in the morning. I’m tired as hell.”
“It’s on.” I gave him dap. “Hold it down.”
“You do the same.” He said as he got in the car.
I closed and locked the door. As I walked to the elevator, somethin hit me. My dream or vision happened just like this. Except at an earlier point in time. I rushed upstairs, thinking the rest of the vision will happen the same way. When I got on my floor, I opened a hidden safe and took my gun out. I opened the door and searched the room for anybody. I ended finding not a single soul. I looked at Monique. She was knocked out cold. I kissed her and lied down next to her. Feeling my presence, she immediately laid on my chest. How was I goin to tell her? I had to do it in the morning.

The next morning, I woke up and made breakfast at about 6. I was goin to school, but not to stay. Monique woke up due to the sweet smell of sausage. I had her plate on the table. When she came to the table, she was dressed and ready. She kissed me.
“Good morning.” She said.
“Mornin.”
“You’re not goin to school?”
“I am, but only for a lil while. Baby, on Saturday, Will and I will be joining 14 other players to play on the USA High School Dream Team. We will compete around the world against over 16,000 teams. It will continue from Saturday til March 3rd. So today, I will talk to all my teachers and tomorrow will be nothing but workouts and exercises. We leave Saturday morning.”
Well, that was easier than I thought it would. Ma always said to say things straight up and don’t sugar coat anything. She didn’t look too happy though.
“You’re goin to be gone for the next four months, and you’re just now telling me?”
“I didn’t find out til last night. That’s what Dad wanted to see us about. I wish we had more time myself, but that’s not the case. As you can see, this will have a huge affect on our school.”
“Yes, I know. Is this what the breakfast was about? To soften the blow? Well, I’m not accepting it. I refuse to. Tell your father that you don’t want to go.”
“I do want to go. I finally have a chance to see the world without spending a dime. If I was able to take you wit me, I would in a heartbeat. I’m sorry, baby, but I’m goin.” She folded her arms around her chest and looked at me. “I’m not changing my mind.”
“It’s like that than.” She grabbed her stuff and left.
“Mo?” I called for her. She closed the door. I sat and shook my head. “Why is she being so selfish?” I called Will. “How’d she take it?” I asked him as he picked up.
“Not too good. How bout Mo?”
“Yea, right. So what time you goin up to da school?”
“Prolly bout noon.”
“I feel ya. A nap sounds like a pretty good idea.”
“Fa sho…I’ll hit you up when I’m bout to roll out.”
“It’s on.” I hung up wit him and cleared off the table. I put the dishes in the dishwasher and lied down. “Just when I thought she’d be happy for me.” I said to myself. I sighed and closed my eyes.

I ended up waking up a lil afta one. I got up, took a shower, and got dressed. I called Will to see if he was up.
“Aye, Will, you up?”
“I’m bout to leave now. I was just bout to hit you up.” He replied.
“I see. I’ll see you at da school then.”
“It’s on.”
I hung up wit him and went to the car. I chose to drive my Porsche. I ended up at school in five minutes. I saw Will already walkin towards the building. That’s his advantage of living 5 miles closer. I caught up wit him. We then went to each teacher we had this semester and our teachers for next semester. They gave us the rest of the assignments that were goin to be given out during the time we were gone. We then did the hard part and talked to Coach.
“Y’all are doin what?” He said after we told him.
“We’ll be gon fo da rest of the season.” Will restated.
“Is worldwide recognition really more important than your school team?”
“Fa sho, Coach. You know you would have hopped on the same opportunity if presented to you.” I told him.
“You’re probably right. I guess this will be an opportunity for the rest of the team to shine. Our attendance will drop though.”
“Y’all will do fine.” Will said. “Just come to the championship that will be held on March 3rd at C-Town Coliseum.”
“You know I’ll be there.” We shook his hand. “Do your best.”
“We shall.” I said.
We walked out the gym and out to the front of the school. Classes were bout to let out, so we waited. Oak, G, Post, and Frost were out the hospital and returned to school today. We decided to wait for everyone at the spot. When they saw us, they started smiling. We gave everyone dap.
“If you were skippin, you coulda let some niggaz know.” C-Lo stated.
“Wasn’t like that. We bout to bounce and we needed our work from now til March 3rd.” Will informed em.
“For what?” Frost asked.
“We’ve been drafted on the USA High School Dream Team.” I told em.
“I heard of dat shit.” DT said. “They compete around the world in a tournament. Word has it the championship will be here.”
“That it will be, maestro,” Will told him, “a championship that we will be in and win.”
“That means y’all will have to hold down the fort.” I said to C-Lo and DT. “Y’all runnin dis while we gon.”
“Of course,” C-Lo began, “we gon have dis shit on lock.” I gave everyone dap and got in the car.
“I’ll hit y’all up er’once in a while.” I told em as I started the car. I threw up them deuces and left.
When I got home, I went straight up to the weight room. I continued working out and improving my leg strength. I lifted weights for about an hour. I then went up to the gym and started shooting around. I wasn’t goin to be satisfied til I hit 100 straight shots from 3-point land, 200 shots from anywhere else, 500 in the paint, 6 half court, and 1 from beyond half court. It was 4 when I started. I went at it for a long time. I started short and made my way out. I hit the 500 in the paint without a problem. It took 2 tries to hit 200 straight jumpers. I then skipped the 3-pointers and went to the cross-court shot. It took 5 tries to hit from the opposite free throw line. I then moved on to half court shots. I decided not to try to go for 6 in a row. I ended up making 6 out of 8. Finally it was time for 3-pointers. The first time I hit 50 straight and missed. Then I hit 55 straight and missed. Next I hit 72 straight and missed. Finally, I hit 84 straight and missed. I decided to give it a rest for the night. It was approaching 11 pm. The only breaks I took were for water. I headed downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed some hot wings that Mom made. I had about 25 wings and went upstairs to my room. I checked my messages and turned on the TV. I turned to HBO Classics and started watching Bruce Almighty. I refused to think about Monique. It was hard to, but I tried to keep myself occupied. I then looked over at the pile of clothes in the dirty basket. When I finished eating, I separated the clothes and started washing. After putting in the first load, I decided to call Monique. I tried her cell, but only her voicemail picked up.
“Baby, I haven’t talked to you since this morning, and I was checkin to see how you’re doin. Obviously you’re mad at me, but I mean, what do you want me to tell you. I’m not goin to be able to talk to you or see you tomorrow since Dad plans on training us a lil bit more. Our flight leaves at 8 am on Saturday. It would really mean a lot to me if you at least said goodbye and wish me luck. If you get a chance, call me back. Love you, baby girl. One.” I hung up and lied down. “I really do hope she comes. I can’t think about that now. I need to go to sleep and prepare myself for an intense workout tomorrow.” I said to myself. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

CHAPTER 11

Friday, October 31st, 2102. Dad came to my room at about 7 am.
“Rise and shine, son. Time to begin. William will be here in about 10 minutes. Shower and meet me in the weight room.” He told me.
I nodded and got up. I took a shower and put on my white basketball short set. I went up to the weight room. Will was there and already started stretching. I joined him.
“Gentlemen,” Uncle Tevin began, “we realize that y’all are the best in the world, but there’s room for improvement. Y’all can be faster, stronger, and even more accurate. For the next 8 hours, y’all will be worked to death. Now, for the first 4 hours, let’s workout, and afta that, we’ll practice.”
With that being said, our training began. Weights were increased and our bodies were pushed to the max. After an hour into the workout, C-Lo and DT joined us.
“What are y’all doin here?” I asked them.
“Your dad invited us to train with y’all.” C-Lo replied.
“Figured while y’all are gone, they can help us get even better for the championship.” DT added.
Now it was the four of us lifting more than we ever lifted and running more than we ever ran. After 3 hours of working out, we were beat.
“Iight, fellas, take 5.” Dad suggested. “When you return, we’ll go into basketball.” Will and I nodded. “As for you two, y’all will go wit Tevin.” C-Lo and DT nodded. We went downstairs and grabbed some energy bars.
“I had no idea Kevin and Tevin were this heavy.” C-Lo stated.
“Yeah, they do tend to be a lil aggressive.” Will agreed.
“Now I see why y’all are the greatest athletes.” DT commented.
“Fa sho.” C-Lo agreed.
We grabbed some Gatorades and went back up to the weight room. We started working on abs next. By the time that was over, we did about 1000 crunches. You know we were hurtin. Will and I went with Dad to shoot around and perfect some more skills. He wanted us to hit 100 straight 3-pointers, which I failed to do last night. Will and I were on a roll for a while, but kept having that one miss. Finally, I was able to hit 100 straight after 3 tries today and 4 yesterday. Will hit his after 5 tries in all. Of course, he is a better 3-point shooter then me.

1830 hit when we were finished. We did more than what was planned, but I feel it was well worth it. C-Lo and DT went home, but Will stayed. We started watching game films that Dad gave us on each high school in the tournament. We had no intention on looking at all of them, just the ones that were the best. There were 29 teams we had to look out for located in: Yugoslavia, Russia, China, Japan, Liberia, Germany, Canada, Brazil, and Romania. The first film we looked at was a high school in Romania.
“Iight, you see that, ri?” I asked Will.
“5 does a screen for 4, the 2 guard swings the ball to 3, sets a pick for 5, and does a give and go to 1. Sounds simple enough.” Will replied.
“Maybe, but there’s more to it than that. They show the impression of an outside shot the whole time. If we don’t watch it, we could spread the floor out too much and be penetrated.”
“True, but as long as we pay attention to how the 5 man is positioned, we’ll be able to read the play.” We looked at the play again.
“Yea, you’re right.” I agreed. We looked at a different play, this time their defense. “You see that?”
“Court awareness. They stay aware of other players to know when to help and when not to help.”
“This is goin to be one interesting tournament.” I declared.
We continued looking at game films until about 2 am. We passed out at around the same time. We woke up around 6 and got ready to go. We were downstairs by 6:30 with all our bags. Mom and Aunt Keasha were first for goodbyes.
“Y’all be good. Play well, stay focused, and bring us back something from everywhere y’all go.” Mom told us as she gave us hugs and kisses.
“We shall be front row when y’all come back for the championship.” Aunt Keasha said as she gave us hugs and kisses.
We blew kisses and walked out to the limo that was taking us to the airport. Dad and Uncle Tevin were with us.
“Iight fellas,” Dad began, “the important info y’all need to know.”
“For anything that’s necessary, remember to say you’re affiliated with SJ Enterprise.” Uncle Tevin informed us.
“What is considered necessary?” I asked.
“You’ll know when it’s necessary.” Dad replied.
Will and I looked at each otha and shrugged our shoulders. We got to the airport at 7. We were riding first class and so was the rest of the team. We said our goodbyes to Dad and Uncle Tevin and headed to baggage claim. After that, we were about to go through security when Will heard our names called.
“Aye, you heard dat?” He asked me.
“What? I had a big breakfast.” I said.
“Nah, not that.” He heard it again, this time so did I. I turned around and saw Monique and Beyonce running to us.
“Well I be damn.” I said as they approached us.
“Kenny, I’m…” She started to say before I put my finger to her lips.
“Just give me a kiss and I’ll forgive you.”
She wrapped her arms around me and kissed me. It wasn’t a short “how are you doin” kiss, it was a long, passionate “I’m goin to miss you” type kiss. Dats all a nigga ask fo. She then pulled back.
“Are you goin to call me every night?”
“Of course. Once I figure the time differences and er’thang.” She smiled. “You know I’mma miss you baby girl.”
“I’mma miss you too.” I kissed her again. “I love you, Kenny.”
“I love you too.” I heard them announce when boarding was going to begin. “It’s time.” I kissed her one last time. “I’ll call you the moment we touchdown.” She nodded.
I saw tears stream down her face. Will and I headed through security and went to our gate. I really doubt y’all wanna know what we’re doin the entire time, so I’ll talk about what’s goin on wit Monique.

She didn’t leave the airport right away. She watched all the planes take-off and noticed which one I was on. After my plane took-off, she decided to leave.
Later that night, while Monique was doing homework, anticipating my call, her doorbell rang. She got up and answered it to find out that it was her ex-boyfriend, Gary Winston.
“Hey baby.” He said. He had flowers in hand and a smile on his face. “Did you miss me?”
He stepped up to her and kissed her on the lips. Monique was so shocked she didn’t react before the kiss happened. Upon realizing it, she immediately pushed him off.
“You have some nerve.” She said.
“So do you. I didn’t even get any tongue.”
“Be lucky you even got as far as you did. How did you find me?”
“Your cousin. She still thinks I’m the best for you.” He looked around. “Ain’t ya goin to invite me in?”
“No, I’m not. You are the last person I want to see.”
“Come on, don’t say that. We have a history, baby. You and I were meant for each other.”
“Yea, we had a history. The key word to that was had. I don’t want anything to do with you. You hurt me and I don’t want to revisit that.” She folded her arms across her chest.
“I admit, I made some mistakes, but I neva stopped loving you.”
“What about Tonya?”
“Who the hell is Tonya?”
“When you went to Seattle for that tournament, you had an affair with Tonya.”
“Who told you that?”
“She did.”
“How?”
“Because she’s my cousin, dip shit.” She gave him the look like he was a pure idiot. “I admit, I loved you, but you broke my heart in more ways than one. I gave you chances after chances and you burned my trust time and time again.”
“Monique, I made mistakes. I’m not perfect, no one is. Please, forgive me. I promise things will be better now. I made millions with all my tournaments, I own my own training facilities, and making things happen. The only thing I don’t have is the love of my life. Come on, baby, we were meant to be together. I was the closest one to take your virginity, so I know I’m the only one you felt strongly enough for to make such a gesture. Monique, you’re the love of my life. I’m sorry for everything I’ve done and I want to make it up to you.” He pulled out a ring. “Will you marry me?” She looked at him and smiled.
“You just don’t get it, do you? I don’t want you back and even if I did, I wouldn’t take you back. I don’t know if you have been watching Dateline, the news or Entertainment Tonight as of late, but I’m already taken.”
“What does ET or the news have to do wit you being already taken?”
“My man happens to be the most famous person in the world. If you think I wanted you for your money, why would I settle for measly millions when I can have someone that has enough money to give every person on this planet trillions? He’s smart, sexy, funny, romantic, athletic, and by far the best dresser I’ve ever seen.”
“You’re making this all up.”
“By the way, I gave him my card.” This definitely upset Gary.
“You gave him the very thing that you vowed to give me?”
“Yep. The best decision I’ve ever made. Just a lil info, he makes you seem like a newborn.”
He looked down at himself. The reason she knows anything about the size of his manhood is because even though they didn’t have sex, she did give him a handjob once or twice. That’s basically about it.
“Timeout. Now you’re just bitter. There’s no one who has more than 10 inches and can satisfy a woman better than I can.”
“10 inches? That’s all you got? I was givin more credit to you than I thought. Maybe you should look into male enhancements. Trust the fact that he’s a lot bigger.”
“Whatever. So who is this mystery guy anyway? Probably some big loser that messes wit computers and talks like a fag.”
“You’re right about one thing.”
“He’s a loser.”
“He messes wit computers. His father is the co-owner/founder of the largest computer company ever established.”
“That means he’s a geek.” You know, this Gary character would really piss me off if I were to actually hear this.
“Look, nigga, I don’t know if you know, but Kenny Johnson is not a geek, loser, or fag. He’s 1000% all man, classy, and maybe a lil bit too much of a thug.”
“You’re dating Kenny?” He started laughing. “You were barely in my league, do you even think you can make it wit him? His standards would have to be low as hell.” She pulled out a pic that she carries on her 24/7 and showed him. He saw it and ripped it up.
“Temper, temper.” She teased. “Be lucky I have anotha one on me.”
“I’mma be downright upfront with you. He’s cheated on you so many times already. A guy like this doesn’t stay a one-woman man. In fact, I guarantee he’s bangin some hot gurl right now.”
“Please. He’s nothing like you. He respects me, treats me like a queen, holds me, and most importantly, loves me. Kenny Johnson is not only the man of my dreams, the love of my life, and the perfect man. He’s also the father of my child.” This made his jaw drop.
“You’re pregnant?”
“That’s right.”
“We’re goin to have a baby?”
“We? Look, I don’t know what the hell you been smoking, but I suggest you leave my property now.”
“Or what? You gon get yo big, bad, boyfriend on me? Spare me. I’d kick his ass all across this stupid city.”
“I’ll tell him you said that.”
“Go ahead. Where’s he at? I’ll do it now.”
“He’s overseas in the basketball tournament. He’ll be back soon. I’ll let you know the minute he comes back so you can meet him.”
“You do that. Tell me somethin, if you love him so much, why are you tryin to get him embarrassed?”
“What?”
“You forget, I been all across the world fighting in martial arts tournaments. I make Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Chuck Norris look like little school gurls. I’ve come in first place in every tournament I entered in and never lost a fight. Do you really think he stands a chance?”
“Of course I don’t think you stand a chance. Gary, you’re so thick-headed that you don’t even notice what you’re getting yourself into. But hey, I warned you. If I was you, I’d leave the city.” She took a step back and was about to close the door. Gary forced himself in.
“I came all this way and I aint leavin til I get me some.” He forced himself on her. She pulled out a gun, that I gave her, from her gown and pointed it at his head.
“Leave now.” She demanded. He took small steps back.
“If I wanted to, I could take that gun from you and have my way with you.”
“Then you’d be ensuring your death.”
When he was outside, she slammed the door, locked it, and turned on the security system. She ran upstairs and cried into her pillow. Then her phone rang. It t’was me.
“Hey, baby girl, how you doin?” I said as she answered.
“I’m okay, I guess.” She said, wiping her eyes, and tryin to sound as normal as possible.
“What’s wrong baby girl?” I asked, noticing somethin was up.
“My ex-boyfriend was here not too long ago.”
“Your what?” I said, shocked and amazed. “I thought you said he was in Seattle?”
“He was. I have no idea how he found out or, should I say, why my cousin told him where I lived, but he showed up unannounced and uninvited. He kissed me when I was completely off-guard. I’m so sorry baby.”
“It’s ok, Mo, that type of shit happens. What else did he do?”
“He started goin on and on about how he feels about me and how we should get back together. Then he proposed to me.”
“He proposed to you?” I began to laugh. “He just pulled that one out his ass?”
“I guess so. Then I told him about you. He didn’t take that too well, so he challenged you to a fight. I’m sorry baby, I shouldn’t have told him about you.”
“Why? I’m yo man and you have every right to spread that to the world. Well, at least the ones that don’t already know. So he wants to fight me. Sucks to be him.”
“It’s not that simple, baby. He traveled all around the world to fight in martial arts tournaments. He’s won every single one he’s participated in and neva lost a fight.”
“Don’t worry, baby girl. I’m trained in more ways than you think and more styles than you heard of. I do all my stunts in everything that required stunts. I’ll be fine.”
“Ok. Where are you now, anyway?”
“I’m in Paris. Our first game is in a couple of hours.”
“What time is it over there?” She asked.
“It’s a lil afta 6. Game time is 9 and shoot around is about 8:20.”
“Oh. When did y’all land?”
“Not too long ago. We had a lay over in Spain. I know it’s a lil afta midnight over there, so I’mma let you go for now.”
“Okay, but you do know that while you’re gone I’m goin to sacrifice my sleep, right?”
“Yes, but not tonight. I’ll call you when you get out of school.”
“Ok.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too.”
“Bye.”
“Bye, sweetie.” She hung up the phone and began thinking aloud. “How am I supposed to tell him?” She ended up falling asleep moments later.

Several weeks pass from that night. Our team has not loss a game yet. C-Lo and the rest of the click went to Monique’s house to chill. They’re all over there chillin and conversating.
“It’s an unusual warm day today.” DT stated.
“You ain’t lyin.” Frost agreed.
“Aye, Monique, we gon hit da club tonight, wanna come?” C-Lo asked.
“No thanks, I have so much homework to do it’s not even funny. You talk to Kenny since he left?”
“Yea, he called me last night. We talked fa a good hour. I was laughin almost the entire time.”
“About what?” Beyonce asked.
“He was telling me all the pranks him and Will been pullin. They been havin so much fun it’s crazy.” He looked at Monique. “SO how have you been holdin up, anyway?”
“Ok, I guess. I miss him so much.”
“We all do. Trust me, he’s thinking bout you every second that passes.” C-Lo assured her.
“Thanks. I don’t d….” She stopped as she locked eyes with Gina. C-Lo noticed it and called her over. She listened and came over.
“What’s up, Chris?” She said. “Hey, Monique.” Monique looked at her and socked her right in the jaw without saying a word. Gina stumbled back and fell to the ground.
“Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmnnnn!!!!!” C-Lo yelled.
Monique walked towards Gina as she stood up. Gina swung at Monique, but she ducked and caught Gina in the side. Monique grabbed her hair, and held her as she kept stickin her in the face. She then threw Gina a good 5 yards. Gina looked for somethin to throw, but before she could find somethin, Monique got on top of her and started wailing her with lefts and rights. DT got up, lifted Monique off Gina and took her in the house. C-Lo went to help Gina.
“Damn, you iight?” He asked her. “She was whoopin yo ass kinda bad.”
“Go to hell, Chris.” She said with nothing but anger.
“Hey, what you mad at me for? She was the one that beat the living hell outta ya. I helped you out.”  He then whispered mostly to himself, “I just hoped Frost recorded it like I asked him to.”
“What’s her problem anyway?” She asked.
“What do you think? You tried to get Kenny.”
“No I didn’t.” Monique ran out there in stuck her in the jaw again. Gina hit the ground so fast. C-Lo grabbed her and held her.
“You know damn well you tried to fuck my man!!!” She yelled. “Don’t you stand there and feed me that bullshit!!!” She was pissed off to the highest level of pistivity. “If you ever in your life touch my man again I swear to you on my grandmother’s grave and God as my witness I will slit your fuckin throat!!!”
Gina was slow to get up. DT pulled her up and stood her on her feet. He then grabbed Monique from C-Lo. C-Lo attended to Gina again.
“Whew, I ain’t neva seen her like dis. You musta did somethin horrible.” He commented.
“I don’t know what she’s talking bout.” She claims.
“Come on, Gina, Kenny has the security tape of you tryin to seduce him. I watched it several times. You know he showed her to plead his case.” She looked at C-Lo in embarrassment.
“I made such a mess of things.”
“No you didn’t. You got yo ass whipped.” C-Lo stated. “In a very one-sided fight I might add. You shoulda saw how your head looked like it was goin to pop right off.”
“Thank you, Chris.” She spit blood from her mouth and looked over at Monique. “Monique, I hope you find it in your heart to forgive me.” She said, tryin to smile. DT put Monique down. She walked up to Gina and smiled. “I’m sorry, Monique.”
“Thank you.” She punched Gina one more time, knocking her on her ass again. “Apology accepted.” Monique turned around and went into the house.
“Whew, I hate to see what she woulda did if she didn’t accept it.” C-Lo said as he helped Gina up for the third time. “I hate to see what she woulda done to ya if you had succeeded, ya dig?”
She gave him an evil look and started walking home. She was in great pain all over her body. As she walked away, C-Lo, DT, and the rest of the click laughed at her.

Time really flew by as the day finally came. Monique made last minute preparations, as she got ready to go to the C-Town Coliseum for our championship game. We were undefeated but so were our opponents, Chastin High from Yugoslavia. We were in for quite a match-up as they were loaded with 3-point shooters. My parents picked up Monique and Will’s picked up Beyonce. They were all in limos, of course. When they got to the Coliseum, Monique was the first one out the car and was rushing everyone. Player intros began around the same time they sat down, front row at half court. When Will and I had our names called, the stadium erupted, as we were the only hometown players. This game was aired on ESPN, NBC, and Fox Sports Ohio.

“We’re live on ESPN, here at the C-Town Coliseum in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m Tim Young along side Ryan Dons, as we have finally reached the championship of the High School Basketball Tournament that started back in the first week of November.”
“That’s right, Tim, and so many things have shown in this tournament. There will be a record-breaking number of foreign players entering the draft. But one thing that stayed constant the whole time was the consistencies of Will Smith and Kenny Johnson playing as the top draft picks.”
“The NBA will definitely have quite a draft this year as the class of 03 look to set records and competition all over the league. We are moments away from tip-off, so let’s review the stats of Will and Kenny.”
“Both have been averaging a quad-double the entire tournament. Kenny has been averaging 34.6 points, 19.4 steals, 26.4 assists, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks. Check this, Tim, no turnovers.”
“Things look pretty much the same way for Will Smith, whom is averaging 39.7 points, 15.2 steals, 17.8 assists, 23.6 rebounds, and 5.3 blocks. These are pure NBA numbers.”
“It’s hard to imagine that these two are putting up these type of numbers and they’re not even 18.”
“You can only imagine what type of impact they will make during their NBA years.”
“Here we go with the tip-off to start our championship game. The ball goes up and the USA Dream Team will start off with the ball. Kenny takes the ball down the court and calls a play.”
“One thing I love about Will is his persistence to get open. He just never stops moving.”
“In fact, it pays off as Kenny dishes out to him for a wide open 3.”
“Nothing but the bottom of the net. That’s what Kenny and Will do. They know each other so well that these type of passes become natural.”
“Hold on to your seats, Tim, as Kenny comes up with a steal and he’s now on a fastbreak. With two defenders back, he fakes the pass and goes for the dunk.”
“He’s fouled as he makes the dunk off a tremendous pick. When it comes to free throws, Kenny is automatic. Only missing one the entire tournament.”
“And that one miss came after a hard foul against a Russian high school squad. The foul was called flagrant and it almost sidelined the young superstar.”

Pretty much, this went on for a while. Halftime finally approached and they had the lead 72-69. We may have had a good start, but we started to fall behind the second quarter when the coach benched me for getting a technical. Of course, the crowd wasn’t feeling that. We were ahead 55-40 at the time he sat me down. They went on a 32-14 run, hitting 6 straight 3 pointers. Will scored 10 of the 14 points to keep us from being down by more. In the locker room, Will and I discussed the game so far, as Coach talked to the team.
“How you holdin up?” He asked me.
“How do you think I’m holdin up?” I said in a loud whisper. “He benched me for damn near the entire second quarter. You can not say he ain’t lost his mind.”
“I feel ya. What did you get a tech for, anyway?”
“Tryin to plead my case. Remember when I stole the ball?”
“Yea.”
“I got called for the foul, ri?”
“Yea, you did. I remember now.”
“We saw the replay and it showed I had nothing but ball. I kept pleadin, but he wasn’t hearin it. He gave me a tech for my troubles.”
“I see. We were up by 15, why would you even care?”
“Steal is a steal. Why get called for a foul for somethin I ain’t do?” He looked at me and nodded in agreement. “I just didn’t deserve to get benched for it. Okay, maybe a minute or two, but not the rest of the quarter. We still had 7 minutes to play.”
“Look, dogg, I feel ya and er’thang, but I don’t know if you noticed. These guys don’t play like we do. Their style is a lil odd. They like to slow the ball down, call plays, and do crazy crap like that. The whole time you were sittin down, I did all that runnin just to keep my legs fresh.”
“Yea, they sho didn’t pass you the ball that much. Not until they had you doubled.”
“Ya know? The only reason I scored was because of rebounds. 5 rebounds, 10 points for Mr. Smith.” Halftime was almost over, so we got up and got ready to head back to the court. On our way, Coach headed us off.
“Fellas, y’all talked the entire time I spoke. That’s somethin I will not tolerate. I don’t care how good you are.” He said to us. We looked at each other and back at him.
“I don’t know if you noticed, but we talk every time you talk. It’s nothing new. As a matter of fact, I think you notice every time.” I told him.
“Well, guess what, gentlemen? You both will be sitting the entire 3rd quarter.”
“WHAT?!” Will and I said at the same time.
“You heard me.”
“You can’t do that.” Will said. “We’re the best players on this team.”
“Don’t be so stupid.” I told him.
“Be glad I didn’t bench you for the rest of the game. See you on the sidelines.” He walked away.
Will and I looked at each other and punched the wall. We both made a crack in the concrete. We walked to the court and sat on the bench. The entire stadium booed as the game resumed and we sat.
“Why are they sitting?” Monique asked Dad. “They’ll lose if they don’t play.”
“I don’t know, but if this doesn’t change soon, I’mma have to step in.”

“Ryan, this is very odd. Kenny is sitting yet another quarter and now Will has joined him. Either they did this on their own decision or Coach Forest has lost his mind.”
“Tim, I guarantee you that Kenny and Will did not make this decision. They don’t ever want to come out of a game, especially one of this magnitude.”

“As play resumes, 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter, and already Yugoslavia has increased the lead, 78-69.”
“You can see the emotion on Kenny’s and Will’s faces. They both are furious with Coach Forest’s decision.”
“Listen to the millions of fans in attendance tonight fill the arena with boos. I’m out of words on how incredibly stupid this move is.”
Coach Forest needs to call a timeout and make a substitution. USA is just getting annihilated early on.”

As Will and I sat, the entire quarter was completely one sided. Yugoslavia was stomping us 113-73. I have never been on a team that trailed by that much. The highest was 15 points. Will and I looked at each other.
“Do you think we’re goin in?” I asked him.
“Nope.” He said. “The fourth is beginning in 10 seconds and he hasn’t called us in yet.” We sat quietly on the bench, as the fourth quarter was about to begin.

“This is an outrage. Cleveland, Ohio has been booing for the entire 3rd quarter, yet a substitution has not been made. To add more fuel to the fire, USA goes into the 4th quarter and has still not made the necessary substitution.”
“Now, the lead is increasing as time ticks away.”
“Wait a minute, look on the USA bench.”
“Tevin Smith and Kevin Johnson are heading to the coach. Hopefully to talk some sense into him.”

“Good game, huh?” Dad said as he approached Coach Forest.
“Tryin to be funny. Go back to your seats.” He said, not knowing whom he was talking to.
“We’d love to, but there’s a problem. The two best players in the world are on the bench and we’re getting blown out now 122-74. Care to explain?” Tevin said.
“I don’t have to explain anything to you.”
“Actually, you do. Maybe if you turn your ass around and see exactly whom you’re talking to, you’d get the picture.” Dad told him. Coach Forest turned around and almost pissed his pants.
“Mr. Johnson, Mr. Smith, I…”
“Will shut the hell up and listen.” Tevin told him, cutting him off. “This is what you’re goin to do. You’re goin to call a timeout, sub our boys in, and leave them in for the rest of the game. Or, we can give you a mystery prize and trust me, you do not want to know what that is.” He had a stern, evil look in his eyes as he spoke. Coach Forest called a timeout immediately.
“Kenny, Will, you’re goin in.” We stood up and took off our warm-ups. The crowd erupted as they noticed. We took the court with the rest of the starting lineup.
“Bill, I expect to see you in my office in the morning. I want to know what the hell inspired you to do somethin so stupid.” Dad told him.
“Yes, sir.” He said sadly.

“Finally, someone has put some sense into Coach Forest, but it may be too little too late. USA trails Yugoslavia, 76-136. I don’t think even Will and Kenny can get them out this deficit.”
“I agree. 60 points is a huge hole to climb out of in 8 minutes. You not only have to score the basketball every trip, but you have to keep them from scoring as well.”
“Well, 60 points is the equivalent of 20 3-pointers. There is a possibility Will and Kenny can do this, but I don’t see it happening.”

Will and I went into the game after sitting for the whole 3rd quarter. I walked up to him, “this goes back to training. We shoot nothing but 3-pointers.”
“Goes without saying.” He replied.
I gave him dap. I brought the ball down the court and the second I crossed the half court line, Will was open in the corner. I tossed him the ball and he drained the open 3. The crowd went wild.

“Already Will has began to light it up from 3-point land to make an attempt to bring USA back into this game. Szclew has the ball, tries to pass it in traffic, and it’s stolen by Kenny. He pushes the ball down the court and stops at the 3-point line and fires. Nothing but net.”
“Now Will steals it on the inbound pass. He dishes it to Kenny for the open 3. USA is now on a 9-0 run with 7:31 left in regulation.”
“Szclew is open for a jumper and is blocked by Kenny. He pushes the ball down the court, finds Will in the corner for yet another 3-pointer.”

This went on for quite sometime. We were closing in on them and came down to the final 35 seconds.

“Listen to this crowd. Yugoslavia has been forced to take a timeout. With 35 seconds left in regulation, Yugoslavia leads 140-135.”
“Kenny and Will brought this team back from a 60 point deficit and now have a chance to win this game. These two teenagers are amazing.”
“A huge understatement if you ask me. Yugoslavia will take the ball out at half court. They work it around the perimeter to run down the clock.”
“If you’re USA, you don’t wanna foul, but you’ll only have about 8 seconds to work with.”
“Wait a minute, there’s a man open in the lane. He goes up for the shot and is BLOCKED BY WILL!!! Will pushes it down the court. Finds Kenny.”
“They’re running out of time. Kenny has to do somethin with it.”
“He’s defended well. Kenny goes for a 3, draws the foul, and HITS THE SHOT!!! He now has a chance for a four point play.”
“The fans are on their feet. This place has exploded.”
“Kenny will shoot one from the line.”
“He makes the free throw and Yugoslavia calls another timeout with 10 seconds to go.”
“USA is now down by 1 point, 139-140.”
“What a game we have witnessed here today.”
“It’s not over yet. USA has to foul. Yugoslavia is 94% from the line tonight. If they make both free throws, USA will have about 9 seconds to hit a 3-pointer and send this game to overtime.”
Yugoslavia on the inbound. USA playing tight defense and will try to cause a turnover. It’s thrown in to the center. Kenny tips the ball, but right into the hands of Tolgo. He’s fouled and will go to the line to shoot 2.”
“A little bit more strength would have tipped the pass to Will. Now these free throws will determine the fate of the game.”
“He shoots the first one…HE MISSES THE FIRST FREE THROW!!!”
“He’s nervous. That free throw was way off and so unlike him.”
“He does make the second one though. USA will call a timeout to advance the ball. Yugoslavia takes a two-point lead 141-139. If you’re USA, what shot do you take?
“If Kenny or Will is open, you have to go for the win. They are perfect from outside the arc and doesn’t show any sign of missing. On the other hand, if you can’t get them open beyond the arc, you have to go for the tie and take this to overtime.”
“I guarantee no one would be disappointed about that.”
USA comes out of the timeout and will take out the ball with 6 seconds remaining.”
“What they have to do is get it to either Kenny or Will.”
“Ernest Willow will take the ball out. Kenny is able to get open and receives the ball. Yugoslavia is in a zone. He takes his time and slashes through the defense.”
“It looks like they’re goin for the tie.”
“Kenny goes up for the shot…wait, he dishes to Will who is wide open in the corner. Will shoots it at the buzzard and…IT’S GOOD!!! IT’S GOOD!!! USA WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!”
“What a finish for such a great game. Kenny drew all the defenders to open up Will for the 3-pointer.”
“The officials are checking the shot to make sure he got it off in time and to see if it was actually a 3.”
“It did kinda look like his foot was on the line.”
“It’s ruled a 3-pointer. The USA High School Dream Team has defeated Yugoslavia 142-141 in one of the most electrifying 4th quarter ever played. Let’s head down to the court for presentations.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to present the 2103 High School Basketball Tournament Dynamic Duo awards to Kenny Johnson and William Smith of the United States Dream Team.” The stadium erupted. We held our trophy in the air and smiled. “I’d also like to present the 2103 High School Basketball Tournament All-Star Player, William Smith of the United States Dream Team.” He accepted the award, held it in the air along with the DD award and smiled. “I would also like to present the 2103 High School Basketball Tournament Most Valuable Player, Kenneth Johnson of the United States Dream Team.”  I held both of my awards and smiled. “Last, but not least. I’d like to introduce the 2103 High School Basketball Champions: your United States Dream Team.”  Everyone cheered as we jumped up and down in celebration. We earned the bragging rights. We were number 1 in the world.

After showers and a lil celebrating in the locker room, Will and I met up with the fam. They were waiting for us outside. Upon seeing us, they immediately congratulated us. I gave everyone hugs and kisses, and then approached Monique. The way she was dressed was kinda unusual. She had on baggy clothes, which I’ve never seen her wear. As I stood in front of her, she immediately embraced me.
“I’m so glad you’re finally home.” She said, smiling.
“Me too.” I replied.
“Come on, you love birds,” Ma said, “let’s go home.”
We all got in the limo and went home. Monique and I went up to my room. I started getting undressed and changing into my sleeping shorts.
“May I ask you somethin?” Monique said.
“Anything.”
“Why did Coach Forest sit you down in the 2nd quarter and then both of you in the 3rd?”
“I don’t know. All I know is, if Dad and Uncle Tevin didn’t come when they did, we wouldn’t have won.”
“I agree.” I lied down in the bed with her and we cuddled. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I missed you too. Tell me, what’s the deal with this Gary chump?”
“Oh yea, he’s goin to meet you at my house in the morning. I told him you were coming back tonight and you’ll deal with him tomorrow.”
“Ok. Sounds like fun.” I yawned. “Iight, I’m tired as hell. I’ll see you in the morning. Love you.”
“Love you too.” I kissed her and went to sleep.

She stayed awake for a while. I was so sleepy I couldn’t tell anything was different about her. In fact, my hand was on her stomach and I still didn’t notice. She ended up moving my hand from her stomach to her breast though. How lucky she is that I’m tired. All I know is, the truth was about to come out. Tomorrow will be the day it comes.
