The Owner of My Soul Vol 1: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5

CHAPTER 4

The next day, I woke up around 7 with Monique in my arms. I had the TV on and was watching SportsCenter.

“In other news, KT High School football stars in ClevelandOhio were shot last night in what is believed to be a gang related hit. Linebacker Andre Thompson and Halfback Chris Lopez were the victims. Doctors at Cleveland Metro Hospital will bring them into surgery later on today and say the two stars will be back on their feet in a matter of days. Chris and Andre are arguably the best football players in the world and are most likely the 1st round draft picks for the Cleveland Browns, whom been scouting the two since their freshmen year. The Browns have finished last place the past two years and landed the top two draft spots do to trades. The city of Cleveland, home to many stars, has definitely planned for the arrival of stars to their pro teams. As you all know, the Cavs have assured the top two spots in the NBA draft to make sure they land the two best high school players in the world, Will Smith and Kenny Johnson. Cleveland has definitely been the site to many scouts for all sports lately, so now the real question is can these stars live up to the expectations that have been set. Here on ESPN, we will definitely follow the careers of our future stars.”

I turned the channel and started watching Tom and Jerry on Boomerang. I then heard a knock on the door.
“Who it be?” I asked.
“Your mother. May I come in?”
“Yea.” She came in. “What’s up, Ma?”
“Just wanted to let you know that Chris and Andre are out of surgery. They’ll have to stay off their feet for the night, but should be back to good shape by Saturday.” She told me.
“Sounds good. We’re not leavin until they are.”
“Ok. I couldn’t help but notice you’re car was gone. Did you do what I think you did?”
“Unfortunately. I’mma have to get a new car today.”
“Well, if you must.” She opened the door and was about to leave. “I’ll let y’all be. Chris and Andre are in their room if you want to see them. As you know, Yvonne and your sister are with them.”
“Yea. Thanks, Ma.”
“You’re welcome, dear.” She closed the door. I kissed Monique on her forehead, waking her.
“Morning, sunshine.” I said.
“Morning.” She replied with a big smile. I kissed her.
“Hungry?” I asked.
“Yea.”
“I’ll get you somethin. What you want?”
“McDonalds sounds good.”
“Ok, what do you want from McDonalds?”
“Same thang you want. Steak, egg, and cheese bagel.” She replied.
“And how do you know I want this?”
“You said so in an interview. Your favorite breakfast.”
“Ha, you really do remember everything.” I kissed her and smiled. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
“I’ll be waiting.” She smiled back at me. I left the room and went down to the food court.

When I came back, Will was in the hall talkin to a nurse. When he was done, he looked ova at me and approached me.
“Aye, K, did Auntie tell you about a blood test?” He asked.
“Nah, what blood test?”
“She wants us to submit a blood test so she can have an updated record of our health.”
“I see.”
“I’mma get mine lata on today.”
“Yea, fa sho.”
“On a more personal note, you get Monique yet?”
“Nah, not yet. I’m actually thinking bout takin thangs slow, ya dig?”
“Yea, me too. I can't explain it, but I think I’m ready to settle down and see what this whole relationship thang is about.”
“Mine as well. When we get in da NBA, we only gon get gold diggas and gurls dat want us so they can say we raped them. Remember what happened to Kobe Bryant?”
“Fa sho. Gurl tried to set him up badly.”
“Yea. I’ll holla at ya doh. Get at me when you bout to get tested.”
“It’s on.” I gave him dap and went into my room. Monique was comin out the bathroom.
“I have breakfast.” I said as I closed the door.
“I started to miss you.” I handed her the bag. “Tell me, what inspired your family to make a hospital mixed with a hotel.” I hesitated answering. She looked at me and knew it was deep. “You don’t have to answer if it’s too personal.”
“It’s good.” I took a sip of OJ. “When I was 3, Ma was attacked. She fought off most of them, until they pulled a gun out on her. They shot her three times, once in the head. She was in a coma fa about 2 months. I talked to her every night. Dad believes that she survived do to her desire to see me. Since I was her only child then. But fa two months, we were eitha sleeping in her room, in the car, or we went home. That’s why Dad had hotel style rooms built by the patients’ rooms. That’s also why the hospital is so big now.” I continued eating.
“I’m sorry if I brought up bad memories.”
“You straight. I’d neva be able to forget. If you pay attention to her real closely, her left side tends to jump. Not real noticeable, but if you really look at it. That’s why I’ll neva be able to foget.”
“Did they catch the people that did it?”
“Yea, but luckily Dad got to em first. By the time the cops got to em, they were barely identifiable. The only way they could was by dental records.”
“Ouch.”
“My life has been pretty dramatic.”
“Have you been shot befo?”
“Nope.”
“Have you lost a fight?”
“Hell no. At least not a real one.” I told her.
“Amazing.”
“What?”
“Here you are, part of the richest family in the world, yet you’ve been through more and seen more than I have. I was born in EC too.”
“Damn.”
“Yea. I’ve lived quite a sheltered life. I’ve neva even seen a gun up close.”
“Really?”
“Yea.” I pulled out a gun from my back.
“Today’s you’re lucky day.” I handed it to her. She held it.
“Is it loaded?”
“Of course. The safety is on, but it’s well loaded.”
“What kind is this?”
“9 mm Glock.” I pulled anotha one from my side. “This is an AMV. Happens to be my favorite gun.”
“You actually walk around with these everyday?”
“If I can hide it good enough.” I replied. She handed them back to me.
“Can't say I blame you. You seem to have a lot of enemies.”
“Hatas. Hatas is a betta word.” I stood up and called Ma. “Hey, are my clothes still hea that I left?”
“Yea, in the third drawer.”
“Hotness. Merci.” I replied. I hung up and looked into the drawer.
“Changing clothes?” Monique asked.
“Nah, I can't fit these clothes. I just had my lucky dolla in my pocket.”
“Lucky dollar?”
“Fa sho. It’s the last $1 bill of the 21st century. As you know they stopped minting them afta 2050. Dad gave it to me when I was 2. Since then, it brought me luck. Now if I have it in my actual possession, it can bring me twice as much luck.”
“Didn’t know you believed in luck.”
“That’s what I believe is the reason I’m still healthy, alive, and famous.”
“That’s cute.” She said in admiration. I smiled. “When were you tryin to see Chris and Dre?”
“In a few. I’m bout to go wash up real quick.”
“Ok.” I kissed her and smiled.
“Don’t go no where.” I told her.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” She kissed me and smiled. “Just don’t take long.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” I turned around and went into the bathroom. As I was washing up, my phone rang. I left it on the bed, so I couldn’t answer it. “Answer dat fa me, baby.” I yelled to Monique.
“Alright.” She picked up the phone, “hello?”
“I’m sorry, I must have the wrong numba.”
“Are you lookin fa Kenny?” Monique asked.
“Yea, who is this?”
“Who is this?”
“Gina.”
“Wassup, this Monique.”
“Monique? What are you doin wit Kenny’s phone?”
“Kenny is in the bathroom at the moment. Is there somethin you want me to tell him?”
“Yea that I want to speak to him.”
“I’ll tell him you called.”
“More like give him his phone so I can speak to him.”
“Like I told you, Kenny is in the bathroom so I will tell him you called.” I could tell Monique was getting a lil upset.
“Look, Monique, I have nothin against you. In fact, I consider you a pretty good friend, but do you really think he cares about you afta he’s gotten what he wants? If he thinks you have a lil skill, den he might call you again. So I suggest you give Kenny his phone and let a real woman show you how to handle a man of his caliber.” My phone has pretty good volume, so I was able to hear that pretty well. I decided to save Gina just this once. I came out the bathroom and quickly got to Monique as she was responding.
“You lil mo….” Monique began as I took the phone from her.
“Gina, dis Kenny.”
“I know, I recognize that sexy voice anywhere. I knew Monique would come to her senses.” She replied.
“Whateva, shawty, I just saved yo ass.”
“From harmless Monique? If you say so.”
“What do you want?”
“What? I can't call to say hi to my man?” Monique heard that and was bout to go crazy. I put my hand up and told her to calm down.
“Don’t even play like dat, B. You find out someone has me and you get jealous and start claimin me now? Ta hell wit dat.”
“You’re not sayin you’re actually involved wit that girl, are you?”
Oui, that’s exactly what I’m sayin. So I’d appreciate it if you stop callin me unless it’s somethin actually important. That also means you leave Monique alone. I really don’t want to feel responsible fa her kickin yo ass. Do we understand each otha?”
“Yea, we understand each otha.”
“Hotness. I’ll holla at ya.” I hung up wit her and looked at Monique. “My bad, baby girl.”
“It’s ok.”
“No it’s not. You shouldn’t have had to deal wit that.” I took her hand and sat down wit her. “Listen, as you know, I have a lot of females in my life which are goin to try and call to get me ova there. But look, I’mma cut all my ties wit any women that are not my friends. I promise.”
“You’d do that fa me?”
“We gon try to make dis work, ri?”
“Yea.”
“Then I pretty much don’t have a choice.” She smiled and hugged me. “Com’on, l’eggo see Chris and Dre.”
“Iight.” We went to their room hand-in-hand and knocked on the door. I opened it and looked at my fallen troops.
“Dare go my niggaz.” I approached each of them and gave em dap. I looked at Latoya and kissed her cheek. “Long time, Yvonne.”
“Yea, it has been.” She replied. I gave her a hug.
“How y’all niggaz feelin?” I asked.
“Don’t know.” C-Lo replied.
“Everything is numb still.” DT added.
“That’s gotta be a downer. Aye, did my mom say anything to y’all bout a blood test?”
“Yea. She said that this morning there was a new virus discovered in the Cleveland area. You know that virus that affected 2/3 of Russia last month?”
“Yea, they call it DAF. Is that what is now here?”
“Yea, that’s believed to be what’s here. So Mrs. Johnson wants to take a precaution and test all of us first.”
“Interesting.”
“Yea, well, I hate needles. I’m glad they took a sample of our blood durin surgery.” DT stated.
“I hate needles too.” I agreed. “That shit is like kryptonite to me.” I looked at Monique, “did you want to get tested?”
“Of course. This thing sounds deadly.”
“DAF stands fo Deadly and Fatal.” She started laughing.
“That’s not even scientific. Who named this thing?”
“Dad. He always had a sense of humor with viruses.”
“I take it he’s the one that named the heart virus Heart Breaker?” She started laughing.
“Yep. He also named the stomach virus, The Runs.” She continued laughing. “That man is so shallow.”
“But funny.” Yvonne added.
Will and Beyonce finally decided to come and join us. So we were all in there; talking and joking bout pretty much everything. It was about noon when we decided to get our blood drawn. Will, Beyonce, Monique and myself went into the Blood Ward, where we met Mom.
“Nice for you to finally come.” She said as we sat down.
“Lost track of time.” I replied.
“I see.” She had three assistants with her so we all can get done at the same time.
“So when will you get back to us with the test results?” I asked her.
“Lata on tonight if possible.” I started tensing up as I saw the needle. “Don’t worry, Kenny, I’m goin to draw your blood. I remember how you are.”
“Merci beaucoup. Be as gentle as possible, sil vous plait.” I requested.
“Don’t worry. You won’t feel a thing.”
“You big baby.” Will said. “AH SHIT!!!” He yelled out as the needle entered his vein. “Sum bitch.”
“Who’s da baby now?” I told him, as my blood was bein drawn. Monique and Beyonce were just doin this with ease.
“Alright, you’re all done. Monique and Beyonce, I will have Will and Kenny bring you your results eitha tomorrow or Saturday. If I get a chance, I may be able to give them to you tonight since y’all are staying with Chris and Andre.”
“That’s what’s up.” I replied.
“I’m still goin to keep a close eye on them to make sure the recovery is still good.”
I looked at Monique and noticed how she was lookin. She was tryin to see what I told her earlier. I could tell she noticed. Her facial expression was that of someone that was in disbelief and felt sorry for you.
“Thanks Ma. We’ll be around if you need us.”
“Actually I could use your help, Mr. Johnson. I need you to call your father and tell him to be ready by 9, tomorrow night. Since I’m goin to be here all night and he’s goin to be at work all night, we’re not goin to be able to really see each otha. So could you handle that fa me?”
“Fa sho.”
“Thank you sweetie.” We all left the room and went back to our rooms. I called Dad and delivered the message to him.
“Ya know, Homecoming is in a month and a half. Were you still goin?” Monique asked me.
“Yea. I pretty much don’t have a choice.” I commented. “What you got brewin ova dare?”
“Nothin.” She smiled. “Come here.”
“Well, I guess so.” I slowly walked ova to her. She then pulled me.
“You betta bring your ass ova here.” I got on top of her and started kissing her.

Lata on that night, Ma came to my room. It was about midnight. I got up and talked to her outside the room.
“Wassup Ma?” I said, rubbing my eyes.
“You’re not goin to believe what I found.”
“Depends on how far fetch it is.” I replied.
“Well, I have your blood test results right here.” She handed it to me. I looked at em.
“Iight, I can't see a thang, could you tell me basically what this says.”
“To put it as simple as possible, you checked positive for DAF and IKV.”
“What da hell is IKV?”
“Immune Killa Virus.”
“How the hell did I get that?”
“Genetics. Your great, great, great grandfather had it and died from it.” She told me. My heart dropped and my stomach turned. I started to feel quite sick.
“Is there a cure?” I said in slight fear.
“Not necessarily.” My heart dropped again.
“What about DAF?”
“Not necessarily.”
“So I’m a walkin dead man.”
“Hold on, before you get all emotional, that’s the bad news. The good news is your body is winning the fight.”
“How is that?” I asked.
“Well, your antibiotics contain a protein that’s able to penetrate the outer coating of both viruses. At the rate it’s goin, you will be 100% clean by next week.”
“Damn. I’m too special fa my own good.” I replied.
“Now, here’s what I need to ask of you. Will you be willin to have more blood drawn so I can isolate the much-needed protein? With that component I believe I can develop a cure so everyone in the world can be rid of both DAF and IKV.” I hesitated in my response, still in fear of the needle part.
“Yea, if it’ll help mankind. Without a doubt.” I swallowed my pride.
“That’s my son. Come now, first born. Let’s get this ova wit.” I followed her back into the Blood Ward and had more blood drawn out.

With a band-aid on my arm, I started heading back to my room when I ran into Yvonne. She had money in hand and looked to be heading towards the vending machines. She looked up and saw me.
“Kenny, may I talk to you?” She asked me.
“Yea.” I replied. She took my arm and laid her head down on my arm.
“I want to apologize for not telling you about me and Dre. He told me that he told y’all the other day.”
“Yea. Why didn’t you tell me? I thought we went back.” I asked.
“I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t tell anyone because I couldn’t handle it.”
“Handle what?”
“The pressure of being the main woman of the greatest linebacker ever to play the game. I couldn’t handle being hassled by everyone about being his girl.”
“Why would you think that if you only tell me? I’m not everyone.”
“It’s not you, it’s in general. I guess you can say I was in denial.” We got to the vending machines and she looked at what she wanted.
“Denial about what?” I put in my card and got two Pepsis. “Why would you want to deny being with him? Were you that ashamed?” I asked her.
“Not at all. Don’t get me wrong, Dre is an absolutely wonderful man. I wouldn’t trade the last two years with him for anything. But I saw him as Andre Thompson the man, not Dre the All-American linebacker.”
“So the media didn’t want the media attention.” I stated.
“You can put it like that I guess.” She made her selections, grabbed her stuff, turned to me and looked in my eyes. I can see the fear and pain. She was in complete disarray. “When you called me and told me he was shot, I didn’t care about anything else but him. I didn’t give a damn about the fact you were calling me, meaning you knew about me and him. I didn’t give a damn about the fact there may be reporters here trying to get an update on everything, exposing our relationship. All I cared about was my man and how I needed to be by his side. The fact I’ve made him wait 2 years to see if he was for real was enough proof for me.”
“Why’d you even feel you had to test him?” I asked.
“Because of you. More specifically, because of all of you. I know how y’all are. I know what y’all surround yourselves with. I knew he was goin to be exposed to that life everyday and couldn’t help but wonder if he was getting into anyone.”
“And you believe what?”
“I’ve developed a trust with him, but I’ve always wondered. I’ve had access to security cameras everywhere and seen some of them. Not to mention the fight that broke out earlier this week.”
“Damn, you saw that?” I started smiling.
“Yea, I saw that. But I must say, I’ve not seen a single bit of wrongdoing. I be feeling bad when I watch the tapes and find nothing.” She looked down and grasped the charm on her necklace. “I’ve looked at this and held on to it every night we’ve been together.” I looked at it. She opened it up and it had a picture of them two together. “I’ve always asked him if it bothered him that I didn’t want to be known about. He constantly told me that it didn’t bother him as long as I did right by him.” We continued strolling towards her room. “Am I wrong for doin this?”
“I guess the more important question is do you feel you can repent? Do you feel he is worth every single thing that will come with him? The fame is only going to grow and the fortune will soon follow. With fame and fortune come thousands of people in your business. The only reason we don’t have paparazzi on our ass is because of Dad’s way of reasoning. If you can answer yes to those questions, then being wrong for what you’ve done means nothing.”
“I see your point.” We got to her room. She turned and looked at me. “Thank you, Kenny.” She hugged me. “You’ve been a good friend.”
“Well, we’ve been through a lot. I told you I’d have yo back and I ain’t the one to go against a promise.” I assured her. I kissed her cheek and looked into her eyes. “You know I care about you too much to see you hurt or in a bad situation.”
“Answer this for me. If Dre wasn’t right for me, you’d tell me, right? I mean, I know you and Dre go back further than we do, but you said you wouldn’t want me to get hurt. I just….” I put my finger to her lips.
“You have nothing to worry about. I was kinda concerned why he hasn’t been dancing as much or never goes home wit a girl. I should rephrase that. He still dances, but it looks more like a front now that I think about it. It’s usually wit some chick that he has no business being with. More importantly, now I know why he takes a girl’s phone number then throws it out on the way out the club.” I started thinking about it. “Hell, I don’t see how I didn’t even notice he was involved wit someone. The signs were painfully obvious.” I looked down at the ground and then back at her. “Anyway, like I was sayin. You have absolutely nuttin to worry bout. You have a good man and I couldn’t be happier for you. Both of you.”
“Thank you, Kenny. For everything.”
I kissed her on both cheeks and her forehead. Then I gave her a little peck on the lips. You’ll never know how far back me and Yvonne go. The thing you should know is we never dated. We didn’t have that type of relationship. She was like the sister I never had. I’ve had her back for years.
“That’s what I’m here for. Now go in there and give yo man his stuff.” I told her.
She smiled, opened the door, walked in and waved at me upon closing it. I smiled and started shaking my head on the way back to my room.
When I got to my room, Monique was coming out the shower, wearing a robe and a towel wrapped around her head. I came behind her and wrapped my arms around her, startling her.
“Oh my god, you scared the hell outta me.” She stated.
“Sorry, but I couldn’t resist.” I started kissing her neck.
“What took you so long?” She asked.
“Was talkin to Yvonne.”
I turned her around and started kissing her lips. I picked her up and carried her onto the bed. She took off my shirt and started rubbing my back up and down. I undid her robe and exposed her beautiful breasts. I continued to kiss her all ova her body. She smelled so good and felt so good. She undid my pants and that moment, I stopped. (Yea, you read that correctly. I STOPPED! Hol up, I stopped? She was ready and willing and I stopped. What the hell have I been smoking?)
“Baby, what’s wrong?” She asked me.
“I can’t do this.”
“Why not?”
“Look at us. We’re in a hospital.” She looked around. “I wouldn’t feel right taking your virginity in a hospital. I won’t stoop to that level.”
“What level is that?”
“When I lost my virginity, it was in the female locker room. I want your experience to be special.” I told her.
“Kenny, it doesn’t matter where when it comes to you. As long as it’s with you, it’ll be special.”
“I’m sorry baby girl.” She started putting her night clothes on.
“I understand baby.” She came up to me and gave me a hug. “I appreciate the thought. I knew you were wonderful, but I didn’t think you’d be like this.”
“That makes us both.” We lied back down and kissed.
“Thank you.” She gratefully said. I smiled and kissed her again.

CHAPTER 5

It has been a month and a half since that night in the hospital. C-Lo and DT were released that weekend, and has made a full recovery. Tonight is Homecoming night, and I’m definitely lookin forward to it. With C-Lo and DT back on the field before the season started, we remain undefeated at 6-0. This game will be aired on ESPN and played at the new home to the Cleveland Browns, Dawg Pound, which holds up to 200 million people. Then our Homecoming dance will be held downtown at the Galleria, which is where a lot of proms are held now and days. It was fourth period, and we were patiently waiting for the bell to ring.
“Y’all ready fa dis?” I asked DT and C-Lo.
“Fa sho.” DT answered.
“I know I’m lookin fa about 400 yards on the ground.” C-Lo responded.
“Aye, how bout y’all hit the weight room wit us.” DT suggested.
“Good idea. I need to get back in shape for b-ball.” Will responded.
“Yea, count me in.” I agreed.
“As a matta of fact, let’s hit up Kenny’s gym.” C-Lo suggested.
“That’s what’s up.” I said. Will and DT nodded.
“How were y’all getting to the dance?” DT asked us.
“Limo. Don’t you remember? We’re all takin a limo.” C-Lo reminded him.
“In fact, our own personal limos wit CTB written on da sides.” Will added.
“We have 3 reserved, wit, I believe, 8 in each. I don’t really feel like doin the math though.” I stated.
“Now the game is at 7 and the dance is at 11, ri?” Will asked.
“Word up.” DT replied. “Depending on how much we score, the game should end at 10. Halftime should be quite a show. Word has it a lot of money was put into it.”
“Yea, I think Dad donated a lil bit.” Will stated.
“Foget all dat. Don’t you understand that we will be playin against our rivals. Bill Clinton High School beat us last year at their homecoming. It’s time to get a lil retribution and whoop some ass.” C-Lo said.
“Here, here.” DT agreed.
“Well, it’s nice that our troops are focused for battle, but we have nothin to really be hyped up about. We gon win and that’s final.” Will said. I looked at my watch.
“The way I see it, if these last 45 seconds don’t hurry up and come, I’mma lose my mind.” I looked at my undone assignment in front of me. “Looks like I found my time passer.” I started doin the paper and finished by the time the bell rang. “That’s what’s up.” We handed our work in and bounced. We were outside the school, in the parking lot, like usual.
“Hey, K, we’ll meet you at yo house in a quarter. I’m bout to go visit Latoya at her job.” C-Lo said.
“I’m bout to tell Yvonne what’s goin on, so I’ll be dare in a quarter too.” DT added.
“It’s on, my niggs.” I replied. Monique met up wit me and gave me a hug and kiss.
“The day has finally come.” She said.
“That it has.” I agreed. “Have you decided what you’re wearing?”
Oui, monsieur.” She replied. We began walkin to the car. “Are you pickin me up fa da game?”
“Depends, do you need to go home for anything?” I asked.
“Nah, I figured I could go as I am.”
“Would you prefer to stay wit me then? I must tell you though, I’m goin to be working out, so I’m not goin to guarantee any time fa us til we get ready to leave.”
“That’s fine. I actually would like to see you work out.”
“That’s what’s good.” I saw Will approaching us.
“Y’all headin to da house now?” He asked.
“Yea, you stopping somewhere?” I replied.
“Nah, I’ll follow you.”
“Bet.” We started headin to da house. When we got there, we headed straight up to my room. “Please, make yourselves at home.” I suggested. Monique and I went into the bathroom so I could change into my workout clothes.
“It’s a quarter to 3 now, what time were you goin up there?” She asked me.
“Chris and Dre don’t have to be up there til 1730, so they can get a last minute warm-up in. I figure 1845 is good.” I replied.
“Works fa me.” Monique agreed. “When’s y’all first regular season game?”
“Three weeks from tonight. Our first preseason game is on Monday.”
“When’s practice?” She asked.
“Everyday from 4-7. It’s not required for Will and I cuz we already know our plays and how to run them. We choose to go every once in a while to see how our teammates are doin.”
“How much playin time are y’all goin to get durin the preseason?”
“Not much. Maybe a quarter. Sometimes we choose not to play so our back-ups can get some playin time.” I replied.
“Understandable. Are you scared though?”
“Why you say that?”
“Well, it’s your last year and you’re goin to the NBA in the summer. Aren’t you worried about getting injured?”
“A lil. But I’m not goin to let it stop me.” I laced up my shoes and put my hair in a ponytail. “Afta we’re done working out, I need you to braid my hair.”
“Will do.” She said. I kissed her and escorted her out the bathroom. When I looked up, C-Lo and DT were here with Yvonne and Latoya.
“Hey, Toya, I thought you had to work almost all night?” I said.
“Me too, then I found someone to cover for me.” She replied.
“We weren’t goin to come at first, but we didn’t want to leave Beyonce and Monique here by themselves.” Yvonne stated.
“Thanks.” Monique responded.
“Well, it’s 10 til now, let’s say we get started.” C-Lo suggested.
“Yea let’s do that.” Will agreed.
We all walked up to the weight room. DT is physically stronger than all of us when it came to weight, but speed is definitely my quality. Will’s specialty is pure endurance, as C-Lo is pure power. I worked on my legs more than anything. Will did the same. DT and C-Lo worked mostly on upper body, but had a few leg workouts. We all did abdominal workouts. I had to keep the 12 pk lookin good.

It was a quarter to 5 when we finished. C-Lo, Latoya, DT and Yvonne started heading to the stadium. Yvonne had to be there early since she was a journalist. Will and Beyonce went to his house. Monique waited on me in my room as I took a shower. I guess I’ll be taking two showers tonight. I had to wash my hair though. When I got out, I sat on the floor, between her legs, and started channel flicking.
“You don’t intend on showin off your braids at the game, do you?” She asked.
“That’s a negatory.” I replied. “I’mma have my wave cap and skull cap on durin the game and unveil your magnificent work at the dance.” I had her braid my hair a few times before and I love what she does. It don’t hurt, they last long, and she does em fast. My hair is a lot longer now since I cut it. It’s down to the middle of my back. At least it would be if it were lying fully down. Since I didn’t have a perm in, my hair is kinda fluffy.

It was about 6:20 when she finished. I got dressed and we headed to the stadium. I prefer to be up close, but Monique wanted to be in the Luxury seats. I guess Beyonce did too, since her and Will were already there. I went to the bartender and bought a bottle of Hpnotiq. We sat down and awaited for the start of the game. The band was on the field to keep everyone entertained, which doesn’t surprise me, since we have the best band in the world. Surprisingly, the stadium was full. Scouts were everywhere, tempted to trade their best players to assure the top picks. I then heard a voice behind me, and in came Latoya and Yvonne.
“Hey, sis.” I said to her.
“Hey, lil bro.” She gave me a hug and kiss.
“Hey, Yvonne, I thought you were gon be in the press box?” Will asked.
“I was, but I think it’ll be more enjoyable up here.” She replied.
“Good choice.” Beyonce agreed. We noticed the band compressing and moving to one end of the field. Player intros were beginning.
“Word has it that Dante is a pretty good first round draft pick if he decides to skip college.” Yvonne informed us. Dante is our starting quarterback. Rated top quarterback in the country.
“He mine as well.” Monique agreed.
“So who’s favored in the media’s eyes?” Beyonce asked Yvonne.
“It’s kinda even. BC High does have the number one defense in the country. We have the number one offense and 2nd ranked defense. Everyone east of downtown thinks it’ll be us, and everyone west thinks it’ll be them. Downtown is split evenly.” Yvonne answered.
“In other words, we’re looking at a close game. ESPN Classic in the making.” I said.
“Looking forward to it.” Will added.
“No doubt.” Latoya agreed.
We started listening to the player intros. They started off wit our defense. When they mentioned Andre Thompson at the end of the order, the entire stadium went wild. Yvonne cheered more than they did. Will and I were very subtle about it. They then went to our offense. The crowd went wild when Dante Hughes and Chris Lopez were introduced. Latoya cheered more than anyone combined. Once again, Will and I were very subtle about it. The band started to clear out. The captains came out on the field. Our captains are Chris, Andre, and Dante.
“Bill Clinton High, y’all are the away team, call it in the air.” The ref said.
“Heads.” The ref flipped the coin and watched it hit the ground.
“It’s tails.” The crowd cheered. “KT high, would you like to kick or return?”
“Kick.” C-Lo replied.
“The Cyborgs choose to kick. Shake hands and let’s have a good game.”
Shortly afta that, the game began. We watched as the two teams were evenly matched each way.

Halftime was approaching, so Yvonne made her way downstairs.
“I have an interview to cover, so I’ll see y’all afta halftime.” She told us. We nodded and continued watching as BC High downed the ball, ending the half. We watched TV as ESPN covered the game. Yvonne shortly made an appearance.
“Hol up, since when was Yvonne doing interviews for ESPN?” I asked.
“Who knows? Yvonne has all types of connections.” Will responded.

“After one half of football, the KT Cyborgs lead the BC Presidents 24-17. I’m standing here with both Linebacker Andre Thompson and Halfback Chris Lopez. Chris, you carried the ball 15 times for 245 yards in the first half. How were you able to break down the number one defense in the nation?” Yvonne reported.
“Well, most of the credit goes towards my offensive line. They created the holes and I spotted em quickly, so I was able to make it in the back field where I’m most dangerous.” Chris responded.
“After Dante threw that interception towards the end of the first quarter, what went through your mind before you recovered the fumble?”
“When I saw Dante’s pass go into their safety’s hands, I figured I could make a play by stripping the ball, but I didn’t think I’d be able to rip it out, so I just hit him. I got a break and hit him hard enough to drop the ball, so I scooped it up and tried to make a play.”
“Thank you for your time and good luck in the second half.”
“Thank you.” C-Lo headed to the locker room.
“Andre, you were able to get 3 interceptions and 4 sacks, overall, how do you feel about your defense?”
“I believe there is room for improvement. We still allowed them to score 17 points in the first half, not to mention I missed a couple of tackles, so I think we can definitely improve and be able to put even more pressure on the quarterback.”
“When you were called for pass interference on the play that tied the game at 17, what did Coach Simmons tell you?”
“He assured me that it was not pass interference, so he tried to calm me down. Personally I thought it was a clean knock down.”
“How motivated will y’all be afta the half?”
“We bout to be hype. Chris and I are goin to round up our squads and get pumped to take this game.”
“Thanks for your time and good luck in the second half.”
“Thank you.”
“BC Presidents drew first blood in the first quarter by taking the early lead, but haven’t led since. The KT Cyborgs are goin to come back in the second half focused and ready to win this game. Mike.”

“That was impressive.” I commented.
“Very.” Will agreed. “She’s goin to make it in the media biz.”
“Hey, aren’t you goin into the media as well?” I asked Monique.
“Yeah, durin basketball season. I’m goin to do all your interviews and exclusives.” She kissed me and smiled.
“I’m lookin forward to it.” I told her. I looked at Will, whom was motioning to me. “Hey, baby, I’m bout to go take a walk. Keep my seat warm, ok?”
“Iight. Don’t take too long.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” I stood up and headed out. Will met me outside.
“I don’t know if you remember, but we were supposed to do a lil school performance in 2.” Will informed me.
“Damn, I fogot all about that.” I looked at my watch. “Well, let’s head down dare now.”
“We gotta hurry.” We started running towards the field. We dodged everyone, swerved corners, skipped steps, and sprinted all the way there. When we got there, the coordinator looked at his watch.
“Right on time.” He said. “The band is goin to be your beat and melody just as you requested.”
“Thanks.” Will said.
We both grabbed a mic and headed towards the middle of the field. As the crowd saw us, they started cheering louder than ever. As the band played, we began our performance, hopefully succeeding in hyping up the team. It was customary for us to do live performances at most of our school events. The only time we did free shows. All for school pride.
When we finished, it was time to begin the 2nd half. Will and I headed back up to the Luxury Box and were ready to watch the 2nd half. When we got up there, we were complimented about our performance. I sat back next to Monique.
“If I had known you were goin to do that, I would have brought some panties to throw on stage.” She told me. I started laughing.
“Damn, maybe I should of said somethin.” I replied. The 2nd half was underway when Yvonne made her way back.
“You know, I kinda figured what the hardest job in the world is.” Yvonne said.
“What’s that?” Will asked.
“Interviewing your boyfriend. You have to stay professional and keep touching to a limit. I wanted to kiss him so bad.”
“Awww, to be young and in love.” I said.
“Who you callin young?” Yvonne joked. “I’m older than you.”
“You sure are by negative 123 days.”
“Negative?”
“That’s just anotha way of sayin he’s older than you baby girl, try to keep up.” Will informed her.
“You know, I’ll neva understand you two.” She said.
“Welcome to the club.” Monique agreed. Will and I started smiling and shaking our heads.
“We’re not complicated, y’all are just under deviated.” Will said.
“What the hell does that mean, baby?” Beyonce asked.
“It means we’re not the ones that are abnormally impossible to decipher, it’s just y’all are fitted and prostacked. Duh.” I replied.
“What?!” Latoya said beyond confused.
“We’ll put it simply like this.” Will sat up and looked at the four of them. I looked at em as well. He then started off by saying, “Our speech and meanings can be easily deciphered…..”
“By matriculating the corresponding grammerfied mammograms…..” I continued.
“With it’s own submeaning and defined contextual literary supplements….”
“Further attriculating the hidden values and components in covert dialogue…..”
“Thus encircling and grasping the very growth and fertilization of our perspective…”
“Continuing the decomposition of our point of view with meaningless….”
“Sometimes pointless….”
“But, nonetheless, extremely invigiorating codes of communication….”
“That finally brings about the understanding.” We both said, finishing our breakdown.
They stared at us, we stared back. They then looked back at each other and then back at us.
“HUH!!!!” All four ladies said.
“You know, we can re-word this a hundred times and you’ll neva understand.” Will said. “Y’all mine as well just pay attention to the game and leave it alone.”
Will and I shook our heads again like it was something we did all the time. To be honest, we did do this all of the time. Hidden meanings. Inside jokes. It was all fun and games to us especially when no one else knew what the hell we were talking about. Even right now it was hard for us to hold in our laugh. Yet, we held ground as strong as we could. We could feel their eyes on us. They didn’t believe what just occurred. That and still tried to figure out what the hell we just said. Few minutes past before they finally let it go.
“What happened so far?” Yvonne asked.
“Nothin. The kick went into the end zone, so we’re starting on the 20.” I replied.
The first play we ran was a handoff to C-Lo. The crowd went wild as C carried the ball right up the middle and into the backfield, stopped at their 35-yard line for a gain of 45 yards.
“Hey, Kenny, he getting close to 400 yards.” Will said.
“I think he’ll get it before this quarter is over.” Latoya added.
The next play they ran was yet anotha handoff to C-Lo, this time he got into the end zone. Latoya jumped up and cheered.
“My baby is kickin ass.” She yelled.
The score was now 31-17, us. We kicked the ball out of the end zone, forcing BC High to start at the 20. Their first play was a handoff, but was stopped by Dre for a loss of 3 yards. Yvonne cheered her man on. The next play was a pass, but Dre sacked the quarterback, causing him to fumble. Dre picked up and ran 12 yards for the touchdown. We were looking good at 38-17 in the 3rd quarter.

There were 0:20 seconds left in the game. Somehow, they managed to tie the game at 55. They had the ball on our 35-yard line. It was 3rd and 7. If they get 5 yards, they would be in better field goal range. We knew they were goin to run. When the ball was hiked, instead of them giving it to the halfback, the QB dropped back for a pass. He had a lot of choices for receivers, since they were all in man-to-man coverage. He threw it deep to his #1 receiver. His receiver caught the ball, but was tackled at the 1-yard line by Dre as time expired. The crowd went wild as the best way to end this game is by overtime. Of course, Yvonne went crazy cuz her man stopped him. The captains came back on the field and the ref explained OT:

“Gentlemen, we have approached the end of regulation,” he began, “and so far we’ve had no problems. Let’s keep things that way in OT. We go NFL rules here. First one to score wins. No field goals are allowed. BC High, call it in the air.”
“Tails.” The ref flipped the coin and watched it hit the ground.
“Tails it is. Would you like to kick or receive?”
“Receive.”
“Iight, lets finish this up.”

The crowd booed as BC High was getting the ball. We kicked off to them, and they caught it in the end zone. Instead of downing it, he ran out. The block was good for him as he made it all the way down to our 32-yard line before our kicker took him down. The first play was a pass, which was incomplete. The second play was a run up the middle for a gain of 6. 3rd and 4. The QB dropped back for a pass and was sacked by Dre on a risky play. 4th and 13. The QB dropped for a pass and threw it to his tight end for a completion. Dre was able to stop him a yard shy of the first down. The crowd went wild, but not more than Yvonne. We began our drive on our own 33. The first play was a handoff to C-Lo, but our offensive line broke down and C-Lo was taken down for a loss of 4. The next play was a pass to our best receiver, but it was overthrown. The next play was also a pass that went only for 5 yards. We had to get a first down. Coach Simmons called a time out.
“So what do you think they’re goin to do?” Will asked.
“Fake handoff to the fullback and handoff to C-Lo.” I replied.
“I think so too.”
The time out was over. It was 4th and 9. We were deep in our own territory on our 34-yard line. The crowd was on there feet. Latoya was holdin her breath. Dante hiked the ball, did a fake to the FB and handed it off to C-Lo. He ran through the middle, broke two tackles and burned the safeties all the way into the end zone. The fans rushed the field; Latoya yelled at the top of her lugs and ran down to the field. Yvonne followed. We finally got our payback against BC High, 61-55. BC High is our only competition, so we don’t get close games like this often. Will and I looked at the TV to see what C-Lo’s stats were.

“Definitely an amazing game for Chris Lopez, 35 carries for 675-yards against the #1 defense, as he breaks the record for most rushing yards in any league. then again, he more crushes it than anything. But the Cyborgs didn’t just win this game by offense. Andre Thompson proved why he’s the best linebacker, with 8 sacks and 6 interceptions. Check this out though he had 25 tackles. One thing to say about that, oh my god! I just got word that Yvonne Winters is standing by with Andre Thompson. Let’s go live to her, Yvonne?”
“Yes, James, I’m down here with the best linebacker in the world, Andre Thompson. Andre, even though Chris scored the touchdown to win the game, it was your effort that actually won the game. What went through your mind when you saw Greg Drag catch the ball?”
“I first noticed where his location was. When I noticed he was outside the end zone, I had to make sure it stayed that way and he had no chance of stretching into it.”
“Do you think that you definitely had your best game to date?”
“Most definitely. Playin against BC High always brings out the best in me and basically my entire team. For more than 40 minutes, we were in a war, so it feels good knowin that my effort alone saved the game.”
“How did your defense allow them to tie the game up?”
“Honestly, we became over confident. We let down and allowed them to make some big plays. Their defense picked up and got a couple important stops and our defense was unable to stop them once the momentum shift.”
“Do you think that halftime got y’all pumped up a lil bit more?”
“Most def. When Will and Kenny come out and perform like they did, showin true school spirit and pride, it kinda gives you a bigger reason to play hard. Had this been at their stadium in front of their fans, we prolly wouldn’t have been able to pull off the win.”
“Andre, thank you for your time and congratulations on a sensational performance and victory.”
“Thank you.” He winked at her, which the camera didn’t catch.
“Dedra Ross is now standing with Chris Lopez. Dedra?” Yvonne said.
“Thank you, Yvonne. I am standing with Chris Lopez, the man that pulled KT High to victory in overtime. Chris, during that last play, did you think that you were goin to get in the end zone?”
“Not at all. When I got the ball, I noticed the safeties already moved back, anticipating a pass. The fake to the fullback set up my run better than I thought it would.”
“You had a better performance today than any halfback in the history of the sport. How were you able to break down the top defense in the country?”
“I was feelin it today. I was able to break a lot of tackles, get good traction on the field, and basically just move better than I ever could.”
“Your performance today, did it have anything to do with impressing the scouts?”
“Not even close. I forgot the scouts were here. I just tried to play the best game I can and luckily it paid off.”
“Would you consider today’s game to be a one-sided offense?”
“A lil, but only because the run was working. Dante still passed for 200-yards, so it’s not like all we did was run. He still mixed it up a lil. I think Coach Simmons put together some pretty good packages that got us the win.”
“Even though you won the game for your team by scoring the winning touchdown, do you give yourself the most credit?”
“Hell naw, the most credit goes to our entire defense. I had a role here and there, Dante had a roll, but our defense is what showed the world that we’re the best. We may have allowed the most points this year in this game, but it definitely coulda been worse with this offense. Andre made some key plays, well, a lot of key plays, and our defensive line applied good pressure on the quarterback. We won this game as a team and nothin more.”
“Thank you for your time, Chris, and congratulations on a awesome game and victory.”
“Thank you.”
“After a year of being haunted by the loss at the hands of BC High, KT High have finally gotten retribution in dramatic fashion. I’m Dedra Ross, ESPN.”

After the game, it was time for Homecoming festivities. I dropped Monique off at home and headed home myself.
I got out the shower and put on the nicest suit I had in my inventory. Of course, it was white. I grabbed the jewelry set I bought for her on Mom’s birthday. I headed downstairs and before I went out the door, I kissed Mom on the cheek and covered her with a blanket. She’s been working so hard tryin to finalize a cure for IKV and DAF. All I could do was smile. I left the house and decided to ride in my new white, A345 Mazda sports car. Definitely one of the nicest cars I’ve eva seen.
As I pulled out, I saw Will circling in the courtyard. Spotting me, he led the way to Monique and Beyonce’s house. When we got there, Monique and Beyonce came out the house. Thank god cuz I prolly woulda killed their father this time. I got out the car and gave Monique a hug and kiss as she approached me.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for this.” She said.
“Me too.” I agreed. “I want to give you somethin.”
“What?” The first box I took out was containing the earrings. She looked at them and was outrageously shocked. “You didn’t?”
“I did.” She took out the earrings already in her ear and I helped put in her new ones. “You’ve been my girl for two and a half months.  You’re my girl now, and with this ring, I’ll make it official.” I took out the ring and placed it on her left ring finger. She covered her mouth with her right hand, tears enriching her eyes. “Turn around and close your eyes.”
“Oh my god.” She turned around and had her eyes close.
“You’re my baby, Mo. First and only.” I pulled her hair up and put on her necklace. She jumped when she felt the charm and chain against her skin. I then kissed her neck and shoulder. “Your last item is on the dashboard. Your choice if you want to wear it tonight.” I went on the other side of the car and opened her door, “shall we go?” She slowly walked ova to me and gave me a kiss.
“You’re the best man in the world.” She whispered to me. I smiled at her and watched her get in the car. I closed the door and went on my side. “I thought we were goin in a limo?”
“We are. The limo is at C-Lo’s since he’s the closest to the limo service.” I told her. She looked at the bracelet and immediately put it on. “Do you have your license?”
“Yea, got em yesterday, finally.”
“That’s good. I might be too drunk to drive.” She laughed.
“If you’re too drunk to drive, then you must be dead.” I laughed.
“This is true.” I agreed.
I looked at my rearview mirror and noticed Will and Beyonce behind us. We made our way to C-Lo’s, where everyone was meeting. All the limos were parked out front. I pulled in and met up wit C-Lo on the porch.
“Good game, today, pimpin.” I told him.
“Thanks, man, preciate it.” He replied. He had a 40 in his hand and a blunt in the other. “You ready to get this thing on the road?”
“Fa sho.”
“Aye, word has it that votes for Homecoming King are close this year. From numbers yesterday, Will was ahead and close to being the King for the 3rd year.” DT told us.
“Yea, it’s sad that I haven’t won since our freshman year.” I stated.
“But you had prom king last year.” He reminded me.
“He had it 9th and 10th.” I told him.
“Can't win them all, K.” C-Lo claimed.
“True.” I agreed.
“Some say I might be King this year.” C-Lo stated.
“That’s possible. Your scores are lookin pretty good.” Will said.
“Yea, I’m very proud of that.” C-Lo said.
“What about queen?”
“I’on know. I have no idea who’s runnin.” He looked at his watch, “but I know one thing, we’re right on time to be fashionably late.”
“Hotness. L’eggo den.”
We all headed into our appropriate limos. The limo we were in led the way to the Galleria. In the limo, Toya, Yvonne, and Beyonce couldn’t help but notice the bling, bling, on my baby. Of course, they had a lil bling, but nothin compared to Monique. You know I had to hear it from the fellas.
Upon arrival to the Galleria, a crowd was outside the building, waiting for us. A red carpet was leading the drop off point to the door. Our limo stopped in front of it. First out were Andre and Yvonne, whom received a very appreciative applause and cheer. Next were Chris and Latoya, who also received the same thing. After them were Will and Beyonce, who received a bigger cheer. Then, of course, yours truly and Monique, who received the loudest and definitely tearful cheer that top them all. All we did was wave as we walked by. Reminded me of the award shows. I’ve won a lot of awards in those award shows. Maybe the crown will be mine this year. We all agreed not to talk to the press, so we didn’t stop for interviews. When we got in the building, the first thing we did was take group pictures. After that we took couple pictures. We had a table reserved for us, so we went and sat down.
“So where we goin after this is over?” Monique asked me in a sensual tone that only I could hear.
“What did you have in mind?” I asked her in the same tone.
“Let’s go back to your place.”
“Sounds good to me.” I kissed her. I then noticed a waiter passin by. “Hold that thought.” I snapped, “Garcon?” He came to me. “Let me get a bottle of your finest champagne and finest breadsticks.”
“Comin right up, sir.” He replied.
“Thank you.”
“See, if this was our old school, we wouldn’t be able to get any champagne. Nothin but sparkling cider.” Beyonce told us.
“That’s why I would like to take the time to make a toast.” I said. “But, not until we have champagne to toast wit.” Next thing I know, he was behind me. “Damn, that was fast.”
“A menu will be around soon.”
“Thank you.” Monique told him. He nodded and left. I took the bottle of champagne and poured everyone some.
“I would like to propose a toast. Actually a couple of them in one. For starters, we are very grateful and proud to have Beyonce and Monique in our school. Especially Will and myself. I speak for the both of us when I say you two have changed our lives and made it for the better. Now the big toast I want to give is to us.” I looked around and noticed the rest of the click payin attention and had champagne in their hands. “Good. This ri hea is to our loyalty, dependability, resourcefulness, respect, determination, pride, success, and strength of the CTB. As one, we’re invincible. Separate, we’re nothin. So, I toast to the CTB and long relationships.” We lifted our glasses in the air, downed it all, and slammed our glasses down. Everything seemed to be goin swell. Until…
“KT High School, may I have your attention, please. It’s time to announce this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. This year’s Homecoming King was the closest race in history. It all came down to one person’s vote that broke a four-way tie. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you KT High School’s Homecoming King, Kenneth Johnson.”
Cheers from left and right were coming my way as the spotlight shined on me. I was actually shocked for once as I stood and got up on stage. The crown was placed on my head as I looked around and nodded.
“Next, I would like to present our Homecoming Queen. For the first time, a newcomer at KT High is the Queen in her first year of attending. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you KT High School’s Homecoming Queen, Monique Williams.”
If you thought I was surprised before, I’m bout to slap somebody now. Monique didn’t even run and she was chosen. She approached the stage and received her tiara. I took her hand into mine.
“Congratulations.” I told her.
“Congratulations to you too.” She replied. I kissed her in front of everyone right then and there.
“Shall we dance?”
“Yes, we shall.” We led the way to the dance floor as the music began and danced the night away.

We were all in the limo acting crazy as always. Everyone laughing about every thing. We got to the first home which was Dre’s. Yvonne and Dre got out after we exchanged good night and all that. Next was C-Lo, in which all of us got out since we drove there. We exchanged good nights and got in our car. I started driving home with Monique’s hand in mine.
“This has been the absolute best night of my life.” She stated. “I just don’t want it to ever in.”
“Sadly, it has to end, but not just yet.” I pulled into the garage and we walked hand-in-hand into the house.
When we got to my room, she noticed the rose pedals on the floor, the mood music playing, and candles lit. She was speechless.
“Before you think it,” I began, “the candles weren’t on the entire time. They were lit when I unlocked the door.”
“This is absolutely beautiful.” She said. I came up behind her and wrapped my arms around her.
“You’re beautiful. Gorgeous.” I whispered in her ear. She turned around and looked at me.
“You are absolutely amazing.” She stated.
“So are you.” I told her. She started kissing me, stripping my clothes off my body. She then threw me on the bed and started stripping for me.
“I’ve waited my whole life for this moment.” She said to me. “I’ve never wanted anyone as bad as I want you right now.”
“That makes both of us.” I assured her. For the next two hours, we experienced pure 12 play.
